e-paper for Academy of Arts

How UL ALUO used e-paper displays to showcase exhibitors

Visionect, 23 Jul 2025

When the Academy of Fine Arts and Design at the University of Ljubljana (UL ALUO) planned their latest exhibition, they had a very specific goal in mind. The entire space needed to feel natural, calm, and completely analogue. No screens. No buzzing lights. No distractions. Just the work of young, up-and-coming artists, displayed in a peaceful, gallery-like setting.

But there was one small challenge. They still needed a way to display the names of the student exhibitors while following the analogue look.

Why curators are choosing seamless digital signage

UL ALUO wasn’t searching for flashy digital signage. They needed a display solution for art exhibitions that felt timeless without feeling digital at all. It had to integrate quietly into the exhibition, supporting the experience without disrupting it.

The balance between modern functionality and visual subtlety is one that curators, exhibit designers, and museum planners are actively seeking. They’re asking how to introduce digital display technology that serves a purpose without drawing attention to themselves or clashing with the surrounding aesthetic.

At UL ALUO, the exhibition space was deliberately designed without visible tech. No televisions, no videos, no bright screens competing with the artwork. Just tactile pieces, soft natural light, and a mood that invited slow looking. The challenge? Displaying exhibitors’ names in a way that didn’t compromise the integrity of the space.

A natural fit: E-paper displays

The Visionect team recommended our 32” screens and our 6” Place & Play displays, which use e-paper display technology to mimic the look of traditional print. With no backlight, no noise, and no cables, they were an ideal solution for the elegant venue.

Mounted cleanly on the walls, each wireless digital display ran the entire exhibition on a single charge, showing a calm, paper-like view of the exhibitors’ names. At first glance, visitors might not have realized they were digital at all, which was exactly the point.

Visionect displays are designed to disappear into the environment. They don’t glow, flicker, or demand attention, but simply deliver the information without pulling focus from the space around them.

Subtle digital displays for museums, galleries, and creative studios

This project is a perfect example of how digital signage can be used in subtle, sophisticated ways. Visionect displays were chosen not because they looked high-tech, but because they didn’t. They provided the information needed while respecting the atmosphere the curators had worked so hard to create.

Our team often works with museums, galleries, and creative spaces that want technology for exhibitions to be present, but not overpowering. In spaces where aesthetics matter, our screens give people the flexibility of digital without the harsh visuals or clutter.

A modern solution for creative spaces

As more exhibitions and public events seek out quiet, minimalist signage, we’re seeing growing interest in e-paper for galleries and museums. These environments are where e-paper really “shines” (irony intended).

Traditional digital displays are made for fast-paced environments like transit hubs and shopping centers. But creative spaces need something different. They need signage that works in the background, supporting the experience without changing it.
